The Truth About True North: A Complete 2024 True North Seed Bank Review

An in-depth review of True North Seed Bank: its overall reputation, product selection and quality, seed sales, promotions, free seeds, and more.
Author: Jason Oliver

True North Seed Bank is a reseller based in Toronto, Canada. They don’t breed any of their own seeds, but they do work with many of the best seed breeders to distribute their seeds worldwide through the True North shop.

When it was first founded, True North seed bank officially sold only medical marijuana seeds (due to the laws in Canada at the time), though their customers could find all the strains they wanted there. With cannabis now fully legal in the Great White North, recreational customers can drop the pretense and buy seeds to enjoy.  True North seeds are available for purchase online in their shop, by phone, or even by using their downloadable order form which you print, fill out, and mail in to them. True North Seed Bank is a legitimate business that cares about its customers and will deliver on its promises most of the time.

See our recommendations at the bottom of this page!

True North Seed Bank History

True North Seed Bank is a relative newcomer on the cannabis seed banks scene. They don’t offer much information to the general public about their history or how they came to be what they are. Maybe they don’t think that their customers would be interested in that kind of information, but usually, when a company shows pride in itself, it likes to dedicate a little space on its website to the story of how it was founded and how it grew and blossomed into the business it is today.

Strange to not see that from True North, but after all, it’s just bonus information, so this doesn’t affect the product quality or ordering process.

True North Seed Bank Reputation

True North Seed Bank is a relatively unknown name in the industry. It’s a smaller seed bank that is still trying to get on its feet and find its niche. They don’t really have a reputation one way or the other, as most people wouldn’t recognize the name when asked about it. Usually this would be a red flag, causing people to wonder, “Is True North Seed Bank legit?” Rest assured that True North is not a scam. It’s a real seed bank, and more customers than not have a good experience when ordering from them. There is the occasional mistake or bad review – which happens to every company – but not enough to write off True North completely. They are a perfectly adequate seed bank option, and who knows – they may step up their game in the coming years and earn themselves a great reputation.

True North Seed Selection

True North stocks seeds from a variety of breeders. It’s estimated that they offer strains from at least half of all the major brands of seed breeders. Some of their more notable brands include Royal Queen Seeds, Barney’s Farm, Moxie Seeds, DNA Genetics, Delicious Seeds, Sensi Seeds, Nirvana Seeds, Serious Seeds, Dinafem, Dutch Passion, Green House Seed Company, G13 Labs, Paradise Seeds, and CBD Crew, in addition to others.

There are a variety of seeds types available, including regular, feminized, autoflowering, auto regular, and auto-feminized. They have seeds designed for indoor growth, seeds that do best outdoors, seeds for growth in greenhouses, high yield seeds, quick flowering seeds, and seeds that grow to different heights. Of course they have indicas, sativas, and hybrids, and you can shop by relative THC or CBD content as you wish.

True North Seed Bank Product Quality

Because True North Seed Bank is a true seed bank that only resells other brand’s seeds and doesn’t breed its own, the quality of the seeds that you buy will depend on the quality standards of the brand that you’re buying from. This is why Truth North Seed Bank reviews can be hit or miss; it’s all dependent on the brand purchased.

There can be quite a bit of variation in quality from one brand to another – and this has nothing to do with True North. Of course, seeds that are distributed by a reseller are always bound to be slightly more expensive and slightly less fresh than seeds that are bought directly from the breeder. Just the simple act of adding in that middleman takes the price up and the freshness down, since they have to ship the seeds to their location first and then ship them out to you, all while still making a bit of profit to make it worth their while. It’s annoying, but if you can’t buy directly from your favorite breeder because they don’t ship to your country, don’t accept your preferred method of payment, or for other reasons, it’s a necessary evil.

It’s always best to buy directly from the breeder if you can, but sometimes that’s just not possible. In those cases, it’s important to find a reseller who meets your needs, ships to your country, accepts your preferred method of payment, stocks the strains you want from the brand you like, and delivers quickly with a reasonable markup. You don’t want to be buying old seeds that have been sitting in a storage room or warehouse since who knows when. You want fresh seeds that are on premises and ready to ship out, but have been properly stored to maintain their freshness and viability, and haven’t been sitting around for ages either.

In short, the quality of your order will depend on the initial quality of the original product, but expect it to be a step down from that any time you’re buying from a reseller. True North Seed Bank has been known to only order certain items from their providers as they are ordered from the True North store, which ensures the maximum freshness of the products, but it can also mean a long wait for customers – sometimes as long as three weeks or more. If you need your seeds in a hurry, be sure to contact True North to see if what you want is currently in stock or whether it will need to be special-ordered.

Customer Service

Customer service at True North Seed Bank is adequate. The people there generally try to solve your problem as they understand it in a quick, efficient way. Of course, this is not always possible, and miscommunications do happen. Everyone has bad days sometimes, and the same is true for the True North customer service team. On the positive side, wait times are usually not very long, and you won’t have to worry about being placed on hold for hours and hours.

All in all, contacting True North customer service to solve a problem is way less painful than trying to call your cable company, but still not as pleasant as some of the other brands that have exceptionally friendly customer service staff who love their jobs. Overall, it’s a pretty average experience.

Sales, Promotions, and Discounts

True North Seed Bank regularly has active sales and promotions available for its customers. They often have certain strains on sale at a discounted price, or special promotions for seeds from certain breeders. For example, they might have an offer available for 20% off of all Blimburn brand seeds, a free Kali China fem seed sample with any purchase of Ace brand seeds, or a free Bubblicious fem seed sample with every pack of Resin brand seeds you buy. Their sales rotate, so it’s a good idea to check out the Promotions page on the True North Seeds website to see what’s currently being offered.

They also have discount for using certain payment methods. If you pay with money order, cash, Bitcoin, e-transfer, or bank/money transfer, you will not only save the 7.5% credit card processing fee; you’ll also save an additional 10% on top of that. There’s also a chance to get your order completely free of charge if your name is drawn in their monthly raffle. The winner of that drawing has their order amount refunded to them in the form of a coupon code that can be redeemed at True North Seed Bank website. (The payment method discount is not compatible with any other discount code, though, so you’ll have to weigh your options and choose wisely.)

For customers looking for sales, discounts, and promotions from a seed shop that grows their own strains and ships worldwide, check out the MSNL Special Offers Page.

Free Seeds

In addition to their other promotions, True North has an ongoing promotion that gives you free seeds with every order that you place with them. The more you spend on each order, the more free seed samples you become eligible for.

To take advantage of this generous free seed offer, follow these simple steps to add them to your order:
  1. Add all desired products to cart and proceed to view your cart.
  2. At the top of the shopping cart you will find a section including freebies you can add to your order. Add all your preferred free seeds to cart until the section is gone.
  3. Add any desired stealth shipping items (scroll to bottom of page) to your order. Proceed to the checkout to complete your order.
  4. If you are placing your order by phone, please have a list of your preferred freebies ready to provide to the customer service representative.

True North’s free seed program is one of the most robust that we’ve seen at any seed bank (besides MSNL’s free seeds program), and definitely offers a strong incentive to place your next seed order with True North. They also have a loyalty program where you can earn loyalty points for your next orders.

Shipping, Returns, and Payment Options

True North offers stealth worldwide shipping to every single country and employs a variety of stealth shipping techniques to ensure that your order gets to you safely. All that is printed on the outside of the box is your address and a fake return address. Orders may be shipped either from their headquarters in Canada or their distribution center in the UK, depending on the package destination. Free delivery is available for orders within the US or Canada that total above CA$525. All orders come with tracking information so you can see where your order is at every stage of the process. You can opt for “Extra Safe” shipping by adding a merchandise item like a T shirt or wallet to your order at checkout.

Returns are an option within 7 days of receiving your order if you send the items back in new condition, in their original packaging. Contact customer service to begin the return process. Return postage is the buyer’s responsibility except in the case that the items arrived damaged. Refunds or exchanges are available for returned merchandise.

Payment methods available at True North Seed Bank include Visa or Mastercard, International Money Order, Cash, Bank Transfer, MG, E-tranfer, Bitcoin, and Litecoin.

True North Seed Bank Final Review

True North Seed Bank is a good company that has yet to build a solid reputation for itself. Many people buy from them and have no trouble whatsoever. It’s a good choice for a reseller, but there are also better options available.

Better Alternatives

While True North Seed Bank reviews bear them out to be a legitimate company with good business practices, there are still better options out there. Once again, it is always best to buy your seeds directly from the breeder whenever possible to ensure that you’re getting the product and quality that you paid for.

The following seed breeders are shipping worldwide and highly recommended:
  • Marijuana-Seeds.NL (MSNL) – This British seed bank is a well-known and high-quality seed breeder with a massive variety of cannabis strains. They have an excellent customer service team, offer worldwide stealth shipping, awesome promotions, and free cannabis seeds with every purchase. Payment options are credit cards, bank transfer, cash, money orders, and Bitcoin. Bitcoin and bank transfer orders automatically receives a 15% discount on top of any sales prices.
  • Ministry of Cannabis – This Spanish seed bank is highly-recommended for seed buyers on a budget. Ministry of Cannabis may be inexpensive, but their seeds definitely aren't cheap. They offer a great value for your money and ship worldwide with stealth packaging. Payment options are Bitcoin, Mastercard, Visa, bank transfer, moneygram (for orders of 100 Euros or more), or cash. Their customer service is responsive and friendly.
  • Crop King Seeds – Based in Canada, Crop King doesn't have wide variety like MSNL, but the products they do have are high quality. They have an impressive germination guarantee that gives new buyers peace of mind. They also have a friendly customer service team and worldwide stealth shipping. Payment options are Visa, Mastercard, Bitcoin, and Interac E-Transfers (Canadian customers only).

I wish I had found and read these reviews before buying my seeds from True North! Only half of the seeds I ordered sprouted. I have emailed repeatedly about how they handle non-viable seeds with no response. They charged $20 to mail my seeds across Canada when they could have been mailed with a $1.94 stamp. They sent a load of advertising with my order, so I was actually paying the shipping for their ads! I would definitely not recommend this company.

True North is truly a joke. Their stealth shipping was just seeds placed inside a puzzle box. Which was promptly confiscated. I paid extra money for the stealth shipping too. Total joke. Do not waste your time and money on these jokers.

For anyone who has medical conditions or dexterity issues, the vessels used are horrendous! The foam inside ejects the seeds,as they were so tiny, I ended up losing two.
I never did get any free seeds as promised or advertised. If you are on a budget, skip these scoundrels!

Run Forest Run. Their customer service is pathetic. I have ordered from them twice and had problems both times. I have emailed them and it took several weeks for them to even respond. The seeds wouldn’t pop, they told me to take pictures. Pictures of what? Seeds on paper towel? I asked if they have had problems and they accused me of not knowing what I was doing. I will never order from them again.

Ordered 4 seeds. 2 wouldn’t germinate, 1 germinated but was so weak it died and the 4th germinated but is also weak and looks like it is going to die. Tried contacting them twice but totally ignored. Total rip off. No phone, no reply to email and total crap for seeds. Would not recommend anyone purchase. Avoid as there are many others that are better. Rating would be Zero.

Bought seeds from True North Seedbank 5 in April 2020 and i did receive them.
I germinated 5 seeds and only 1 germinated. Im not new at this i put them in a glass of water for 15 hiurs and 3 took 6 hours to finally sink.
Then placed them unber a damp paprr towel took 7 days for a small tail to appear. The one that germinated is crap.
Sent a message to True north seeds will see if they reimburse me or at least replace them.

Very bad seed bank. When I was new to growing I wanted to order from Canada. I ordered and paid much more then other sites (red flag right there).

Horrible experience, I had to try and contact them countless times before getting through. It took months to get my order and it wasn’t even what I ordered. The seeds themselves were in original breeder packaging and all germinated and grew fine. I’ll never order from True North seed bank again.

Ordered on April 30 2020, it’s now May 28 2020, Payment processed in less than a day and when I go to the site my account says processing order, that’s the last I have heard from them! Emailed once but no response what so ever. Save your hard-earned cash. I make $356 Canadain a month on my old age pension and they stole $87 of that, for shame! 🙁

This seed bank is a joke, shorted my order at first, and hey I understand sh*t happens sometimes. Then they asked for pictures to prove it? That makes no sense. When I agreed and sent pictures, they just stopped responding altogether. Don’t waste your time or money, there are WAY better seed banks out there.

These guys are a total scam. Placed an order with insured delivery and when I tracked the package it was delivered to an address in Washington State when I live in Washington DC. They would not honor the insurance on my delivery and stopped returning emails. I must have written them 20 times and tried calling too but they shut down their customer service hotline. They are not legit in my opinion.

I ordered on 2/14 for the 70% off. I got screenshots from waiting on hold for hours just for the phone call to be cut off. When 8 out of 18 didn’t sprout I threw them in the trash not thinking.

I’m very mad because they acted like I was lying on the the phone. So I dug through the trash for a day and a half and found 7 of the 8 to prove them wrong. I’m a honest person. I got the picture of the soaked seeds and no I can’t get a answer from them. Like I said I got screenshots of hours upon hours of wait time.

My review:

Placed my order with true north seeds on 2/14 when they offered the 70% discount. Today I finally got through to them on the phone because my credit card needed authorization as they use a CHINESE payment processor.

I had wasted over half an hour on the phone with Capital One on 2/15 to finally get that authorization. I emailed them to run the card again, but they ignored me and did nothing. Subsequent email also yielded NO reply.

I called and called and called … but as I have to earn a living, I had to hang up before never got to a person until today, after a 40 minuted hold.

Of course my Capital One authorization had expired and I decided to give them my Discover card as they are easier to deal with. Instead of running the card to let me know if I needed to call Discover, he could only forward the info to their processing department.

SERIOUSLY?

They gave me two free seeds, but how does that make up for AT LEAST 7 hours wasted on this order.

And we’re not done yet!

CLOSED weekends, CLOSED evenings … and I might even get a major phone bill as their emails did NOT provide the toll free number.

They did pretty much the same thing to me. They had my approved purchase and money for 4 weeks and never shipped anything. I kept emailing and always got a canned reply. Then they said one of the strains was sold out but would ship the remaining order, 2 weeks later nothing shipped.

Bottom line: bad experience, terrible customer service, called also, never got through. It also takes them weeks to issue a credit for your charge.

Ordered 6 seeds and with all the extra shipping insurance and random toy I paid $120. Sent USD cash and guess what? Never arrived. Which tells me someone in their company is pocketing it.

Only got canned cut and paste responses to my specific questions which did not even address any of them. Tells me they are either corrupt or failing to either fix a problem or warn their customers.

Not a good way to do business, won’t last for long – people need to be warned.

They do not warranty their seeds…. buy at your own risk!

Here’s what they told me:

Unfortunately due to the nature of our business, we are unable to discuss, guarantee or promote germination due to legality issues. All germination and cultivation inquiries will be ignored. As noted on our website under the legal disclaimer, “By purchasing from True North Seed Bank (www.truenorthseedbank.com) you accept our Terms & Conditions, Privacy Policy and Legal Disclaimer.” “True North Seed Bank does not accept any product-liability and we do not give any guarantees.” This can be found here: truenorthseedbank.com/legal-disclaimer ;

As germination rates can be affected by many variables that we cannot control, including but not limited to: proper storage of the souvenirs, method date of order etc., most breeders cannot and will not guarantee germination, including in countries where it is legal to germinate souvenirs. We do record and relay all complaints and reviews regarding our products back to the breeders and would like to thank you for your feedback.

If you have any additional questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you for your email it is greatly appreciated.

True north seed bank is without a doubt the worst seed bank in Canada and I would not recommend them to anyone, EVER!!

They don’t care about there customers and don’t try to fix small fixable problems plus their prices are the worst in the industry. I paid $74.00 for 3 seeds (they also sent me a free seed), and only 2 out of 4 germinated, and I’m a master at germination as I’ve been doing this for 27 years. When I told them their seeds not germinating they gave me a bullshit answer about policy.

They are losing customers at a super fast rate, this company is going to fall. Within the next 1 to 2 years they won’t even be around… Take my advice stay away from true north seed bank they are the worst ever!!!

30$ To ship seeds from Canada to California? REALLY? It was 7$ from Amsterdam to California, halfway around the world! Not to mention these crooks sell 2 to 3 seeds for 30$ to 40$ and half their seeds are out of stock. Other seed banks offer way better prices and shipping options, to the point of FREE shipping. Don’t have to spend 500$ either.

DO NOT USE THESE CROOKS, as written many times here. They will take your order, charge you, in my case send half the order, then tell you they will send the other half when it arrives. Long story short, been dicked around for months, them saying we’ll give you this, we’ll give you that. Nothing ever comes, nor do I get an email, or phone call. Tried calling today both phone numbers out of business, BUT you can still order from their website.

Sent them $120.00 from U.S. with a U.S.P.S. International money order, as they may be aware it may take a few days longer to receive than from in Canada, got a message order was cancelled cause seeds out of stock, then got message from a Carrissa stating money order never received, received phone call from 844-679-0421 which is true north seed bank # and guy stated he wanted to verify what I wanted on my order due to being out of some quantity so we got that resolved and stated he was sending out order.

I contacted them again on 04-03-2019 cause I ain’t got shit from them an was told they never received money order so I contacted U. S. postal service an they stated money order had been cashed / deposited on 02-26-2019.

Soooooooooooo indeed true north will take your money with no remorse , that shit will catch up to them and they will crash.

As cannabis being legalized in Canada, I decided to try something new (auto seeds from true north).
I’ve been growing cannabis over 30 years outdoors, after checking everywhere and reading reviews of True North Seed Bank – there were some dissatisfied customers BUT I decided to gave it a try…

NOW I know what they mean – I wanted to keep it CANADIAN so gave you a try out – of my order [first order ever] for seeds was a disappointment. First was the Northern lights, grew one inch and is still 1″ after 2 weeks.
Second was NYC DIESEL and it won’t germinate after a week.
I’m very dissatisfied and disappointed, should have took you’re negative reviews more seriously and stayed away – Canadian Ripping off Canadians.

True North Seeds are a complete rip-off. It makes me wonder how much these professional reviewers get paid to write such glowing reviews of this place.

About eight months ago I bought seeds from these crooks. The order did come quickly and I received a bonus seed. It was dead. Out of the other ten seeds only two germinated. I first took three seeds and using the wet parer towel method I tried to germinate them. NOTHING. I then tried the bonus seed by itself. Nothing.

I contacted the scammers. they basically told me I must have done something wrong and that they couldn’t discuss Germination because the seeds were still technically illegal. I started growing pot over 35 years ago when Mexican weed was what was mostly available and often you’d get a lot of seeds. While I might not be an expert I have germinated a lot of seeds in my time. And not just Cannabis. The seeds are old or stored poorly. They took my money and sent me garbage, laughing at me when I complained.

I am trying to get the authorities to look into their practices. Are they a real authorized seed supplier in Canada. If so I wish to call for a review of their license. If not I’d like to see them shut down and arrested. They might have been able to get away with it before legalization but now is a whole different story. If anyone else has been ripped off by them and live in Canada, Please let the authorities know.

Sent cash and it “disappeared”. They continually responded that it was never received. Post office confirms delivery. DO NOT USE.
